Sean hung up the phone moments later with a clear plan in mind: hunt down Reed. Based on what Trey was able to dig up, that seemed like it wouldn’t take too long. However, I had a very different plan—one that would likely result in that end even more quickly. Hunt down Ronnie.

Lyla tried to stop me when I went to leave, but once I leveled her with my enraged expression, she conceded.

“Scarlet should do this,” she said, following me to the door. “You can’t trust Ronnie, Ruby.”

“Duly noted,” I said, grabbing a jacket from the chair. “You need to call Cooper. Tell him you’re okay. And tell him what we know. Maybe he can help track Reed down.”

“He won’t like that you’ve gone there alone,” she warned.

Didn’t I know that was the truth.

“He’ll be so happy that you’re okay that he won’t be angry—at least not for a while.”

I opened the door to leave, pulling it closed behind me.

“Be careful, Ruby,” Lyla called to me through the door.

I didn’t bother responding. I was through giving empty promises.

And careful was the last thing I was thinking of being.
